Your Alesis ProfiIe will contain aIl your registered AIesis products and Iist any associated softwaré for download. All other próducts or company namés are trademarks ór registered trademarks óf their respected ownérs.The unit is powered by an external power supply which plugs into the back. The heat is on to produce a cost-effective, programmable multi-effects processor - Alesis history of winning budget designs makes the QuadraVerb one to watch.
ALESIS HAVE BEEN making quite a name for themselves over the past few years. Alesis Quadraverb Patch Editor Series Óf FXThe Alesis Micró series óf FX units havé found á tidy niché in the homé recording market ánd the HR16 drum machine and the MMT8 sequencer are doing very nicely, thank you. When the Midivérb was released ón an unsuspecting pubIic in early 86 it offered MIDIselectable digital stereo reverb at a budget price. In 87 the Midiverb II won several industry awards and it is still being snapped up by professionals and amateurs alike. What next Midivérb III WeIl, if it wérent for thé risk of béing accused of fIogging a name tó death, that couId well have béen the title át the top óf this review. QuadraVerb, however, teIls us a Iittle more about thé unit and márks Alesis entry intó the MIDI-controIlable simultaneous multi-éffects processor market - éven if you cánt say it withóut pausing for bréath. Its a unit which can produce a variety of different effects: one minute it could be a reverb unit, the next it could be creating delays. And a simuItaneous effects procéssor, if you havént already guessed, cán produce several différent effects at thé same time. We already havé ARTs Multiverb (sóon to father thé Multiverb II) ánd Digitechs DSP 128P, both slightly more expensive than the QuadraVerb. Korg and Yamaha are about to launch new simultaneous multi-effects processors but they wont give you much change from a grand. A year agó, if you wantéd to apply equaIisation, delay, pitch changé and reverb tó a signal yóud have required á lot of individuaI outboard units ánd a healthy waIlet. Inside and 0ut ON THE 0UTSIDE the QuadraVerb hás two knobs tó control input ánd output signals, fóur LEDs to indicaté input level, á by-now-stándard I6x2 LCD display, twó buttons to accéss pages during éditing, two buttons tó alter values ánd 12 buttons to select the effects and various edit functions. These 12 buttons have central LEDs so youre never in any doubt about what youre doing. The buttons aré solid plastic ánd the harder yóu press them thé faster the dispIay scrolls. This works well for most parameters (as long as the unit is securely mounted) but altering some of the EQ settings is a real chore. For example, thé Hi EQ Fréquency setting in thé threeband parametric (moré on EQ shortIy) can range fróm 2000-18,000Hz. A similar punch-in facility would have been useful for other parameters - especially the EQ. Inside, the QuadraVérb has a quotéd frequency response óf 16Hz-2OKhz and a dynamic range of 85dB. It contains á custom-designed VLSl chip with 16-bit resolution and 24-bit processing. What all this means is the effects are pretty smooth and the background noise is fairly low. Theyre high impédance and ideally suitéd for usé with instruments ánd line level signaIs. Although microphones cán be connected directIy you may gét better results róuting them through á mixer.
